The organ is a quality three manual and pedal instrument designed and built for Winthrop Hall in 1965 by the prestigious English firm of J W Walker Ltd.
The tonal style was a typical English interpretation of the "neo-baroque" style in vogue at the time.
In 2008 the organ was completely restored and upgraded by the South Island Organ Company. The rebuild included an aesthetic redesign of the trumpet real (picture) by Dr Jim Rowlands.
The refurbishment and voicing by SIOC has provided the instrument with a rich new sound and increased versatility.
