The UWA User Pays Policy directs that internal hirers will pay the direct costs of using University facilities.
This is regarded as a more equitable approach than centrally funding the venue operating expenses which would reduce budget allocations to all business centres. The User Pays policy does not apply to academic classes.
The hire charges for University facilities are based on commercial rates but discounts on hire charges and utilities charges are provided to official University bodies and affiliated Guild clubs. However, wage and salary costs incurred by University Theatres to present the function must be recovered from the hirer in full. Hirers wishing to apply for a discount or fee waiver should contact the Theatre Manager in the first instance.
To ensure discounts are allocated equitably, hirers are categorised as being Internal, Approved or External. The nature of the function is also taken into consideration when establishing the appropriate discount.
This category is strictly limited to academic and administrative bodies within The University of Western Australia and Guild affiliated clubs. To receive the Internal hirer discount, the function must be a core business activity, managed within the organisation.
Approved Hirers are those who have an official association with the University or those whose activities are judged to be beneficial to the University, such as the Perth International Arts Festival and the University Choral Society. Internal bodies presenting a non-core function or co-presenting an event with an external organisation may also be eligible for Approved status.
External hirers are those with no association with the University. They pay full commercial rates regardless of whether they are corporate, fund raising or amateur organisations.
